AHP/OMEL: LEAD Conference

Leadership, Education, Advocacy & Development (LEAD) Conference

New for 2018, Advocacy for Healthy Partnerships (AHP) and Osteopathic Medical Educators & Leaders (OMEL) Conference will be combined into one program, delivering Leadership, Education, Advocacy & Development (LEAD) training to individuals throughout the osteopathic medical profession. Additional content will be delivered through focused tracks providing advanced educational content to meet the needs of individual attendees.


This integrated experience will include keynote speakers for all attendees and networking opportunities allowing professionals across the career spectrum to learn from each other. Breakout sessions will give individuals a chance to choose the topic areas and focus that best meeting their career and leadership development needs.

Keynote speaker: Lucy Kalanithi, MD

Lucy Kalanithi, MDLucy Kalanithi, MD, FACP, is the widow of the late Paul Kalanithi, MD, who wrote the memoir "When Breath Becomes Air," for which she wrote the epilogue. Dr. Kalanithi has special interests in health care value, meaning in medicine, patient-centered care and end-of-life based on her professional experience as an internal medicine physician and her personal experience standing alongside her husband through his diagnosis, treatment and death.

Interactive career development workshops

Career coaches from Flank 5 Academy will deliver interactive and engaging workshops on leadership and personal brand development. Flank 5 Academy delivers inspirational leadership and career fulfillment programs using a strengths-based, growth-mindset methodology. Through a combination of large group exercises and "pair and share" dialogue, participants will explore how to tell their story and deliver impactful leadership.

The target audience for the LEAD conference is individuals seeking training and expertise that will provide them with the tools and resources they need to advance their leadership and advocacy skills. Content will be tailored to meet the needs of various groups represented in the osteopathic medical profession, including:

  • Medical educators and administrators

  • DME and DIOs

  • Osteopathic affiliate leaders

  • Osteopathic medical students, residents and fellows

  • Practicing physicians

  • AOA certification board members

  • State regulators

  • Members of the AOA Bureau of Emerging Leaders

The conference is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. on Jan. 25 and conclude by 4 p.m. on Jan. 26.
